Vizhinjam Port Handles Record 1.41 Lakh TEUs in August, MSC Palak Sets Single-Call Benchmark

51 vessel calls in a month, and 11,011 TEUs exchanged on one ship

Summary

Vizhinjam International Seaport handled a record 141,759 TEUs across 51 vessel calls in August 2026, while MSC Palak exchanged 11,011 TEUs in a single call.

Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram handled 141,759 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containerised cargo in August 2026, its highest monthly throughput since operations began. The volume came from 51 container vessel calls during the month.

In the same month, the MSC-operated mothership MSC Palak exchanged 11,011 TEUs in a single call, a new record for container handling on one vessel at the port.

Cumulative performance

Over the 25 months since commercial operations started, the port has recorded 1,108 vessel calls and handled about 2.34 million TEUs (23.4 lakh TEUs) in total.

The August figures continue a pattern of month-on-month records at the Adani-operated terminal, which positions itself as a transshipment hub close to the main East-West international shipping lane.

Why it matters

Transshipment volume is the core measure of Vizhinjam’s commercial viability. Sustained growth in vessel calls and container exchanges indicates that global shipping lines are routing more cargo through the port rather than through hubs outside India.

Regional reporting links the rising throughput to wider opportunities in Kerala’s logistics, warehousing, and export-import sectors, along with demand for improved road and rail connectivity to the port. Much of this potential depends on hinterland infrastructure that is still under development.
